quantumaniac: Europa Also known as Jupiter II, Europa is the smallest of the four Galilean satellites, but still one of the largest bodies in the Solar System. Is it the sixth closest moon of the planet Jupiter, and was discovered in 1610 by Galileo Galilei. Some discrepancy exists here, as Simon Marius may have discovered Europa independently at about the same time as Galileo.  Europa is slightly smaller than Earth’s moon, and is composed of silicate rock. It has an atmosphere composed primarily of oxygen, and most likely has an iron core. The surface of Europa is entirely covered in ice, and is one of the smoothest in the Solar System. One current hypothesis is that a liquid ocean could exist under the ice sheet, which could very well harbor life.
